Peter Bartolomucci and Lindsey Jeffress who were Cornell High School seniors were selected as male and female athletes of the year. Both played on numerous sports teams and excelled academically.
• Moon Area senior Elleanna Meyer was awarded a gold medal for the creative dramatic writing of the play "Roost," in the 2013 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The play won the City Theatre's Young Playwrights Contest. She and other gold medalists were honored in May at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
• Kathryn Bissert of Green Tree, who was a Parkway West Career and Technology Center senior and Cosmetology III student, received the President's Volunteer Service Award for the work that she and her family did to raise funds for the Hillman Cancer Center. For six years, Kathryn and members of her Green Tree family have created and sold purses. To date, they have donated more than $19,000 to the organization.
• Rebecca Walter, a second-grader at Carnegie Elementary, won honorable mention in the PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest for "Scooter's Dig Through Time." Contest winners were honored in WQED's Fred Rogers Studio in Oakland. Children in kindergarten and grades 1, 2 and 3 submitted more than 1,600 stories this year.
