A police chase that began in McKees Rocks ended with a crash on the Parkway East and the arrest of a Turtle Creek teenager shortly after midnight today, police said.

McKees Rocks police Chief Robert Cifrulak said one of his officers saw a car with tail lights out on Island Avenue about 12:28 a.m. The driver, who police said they learned later was a 17-year-old boy, passed another car through an intersection against the red light, and the officer gave chase, the chief said.

The officer followed the car along West Carson Street, where the boy passed vehicles in the opposite lane at about 65 miles an hour, and then onto the Parkway East, Chief Cifrulak said.

Police ended the pursuit at the Swissvale exit.

The boy couldn't make a turn and crashed near the Greensburg Pike exit, where Allegheny County sheriff's deputies took him into custody.

He was not injured.

Chief Cifrulak said authorities found a plastic baggie on the car's floorboard containing what they believed was crack cocaine.

The boy, already wanted on a juvenile warrant, has been charged as juvenile with fleeing and eluding, recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance and various traffic violations, including driving without a license.

He was taken to the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, Chief Cifrulak said.
