The state Department of Transportation has announced plans for $45 million worth of road improvement projects in Beaver County this summer. Here's a recap of the planned work:
New York Avenue Bridge -- Work will continue until fall on a $7.6 million rehabilitation of the bridge that carries New York Avenue over Harrison Street and railroad tracks south of the intersection with Route 51.
The project involves widening the bridge deck and realigning the roadway approaches.
The bridge deck is being replaced one half at a time with temporary traffic signals controlling traffic.
Route 51 -- Work will begin soon on an estimated $10-15 million improvement of 8.6 miles of Route 51 (Constitution Boulevard) between Route 251 and Cannelton Road in Chippewa, South Beaver and Darlington.
Lane closures will occur through late this year. The project includes a bituminous overlay on the roadway and preservation work on three bridges.
Route 288 -- Work started in late March on a $986,959 replacement of the bridge that carries Route 288 (Zelienople Road) over Camp Run in Franklin. The project will replace the bridge between North Camp Run and Church roads. The project also will involve paving the bridge approaches and shoulders, drainage, guide rail, pavement markings and other improvements. Overall work will conclude in the fall. Traffic will be maintained on a temporary roadway.
Interstate 376 -- This estimated $1 million to 1.5 million project involves milling and a thin overlay paving of about five miles between the Center (Exit 39) and South Heights (Exit 48) interchanges. Work will occur this summer. Ramp improvements also will occur at the Aliquippa Interchange (Exit 45). There will be lane and ramp restrictions.
Route 168 (Salem Church Road) -- $1-2 millionwill be spent to rehabilitate, resurface and improve drainage on Route 168 between Lisbon and Blackhawk roads. Work will occur between midsummer and fall. There will be lane closures.
Landslides -- Work to repair slides will occur on:
• Laurel Road (Route 151), Hopewell
• Moffett Mill Road, Raccoon
• Greengarden Road, Raccoon
• Shivler Road, in Greene
There also will several continuing local bridge projects including Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge rehabilitiation and construction of the new Veterans Bridge.
PennDOT crews will perform numerous bridge preservation and washing projects around the county throughout the summer.
