A New Brighton man struck by a tractor-trailer this morning on Interstate 376 in Lawrence County had been standing in the lane of the oncoming truck at the time of the crash, Pennsylvania State Police said.
David William Nye, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene in the apparent suicide, state police Trooper Harry Gustafson at the New Castle barracks said.
The tractor-trailer hit the man near the Pulaski/Route 208 exit on I-376 eastbound and was reported about 5:30 a.m. State police said because it was dark, the truck driver did not see man in time and swerved too late to miss him.
Mr. Nye had been staying at a mental health facility on Old Pulaski Road and walked through the woods to reach the interstate, Trooper Gustafson said.
The driver, whose family came to pick him up this morning, won't face charges. Trooper Gustafson said a person who stopped at the scene reported that the semi driver was sitting in his truck crying after the incident.
I-376 eastbound was closed for a few hours between that exit and the Mitchell Road exit, state police said.
