School directors have hired the law firm of Ira Weiss to file appeals on commercial and residential properties the district feels may be incorrectly assessed or under assessed by Allegheny County.

The district will focus on commercial properties under assessed by $100,000 or more. Residences that are assessed at 80 percent or less of fair market value may also be appealed.

"We're not out there looking for houses under assessed $10,000 or $20,000," Director Jerry Testa said Monday. "We're just trying to level the playing field."

Alan Bennett, director of fiscal and school services, said the district was allowing for a 20 percent variance in values before appealing.

• Directors approved the purchase of a lighting control console and 18 ellipsoidal lights for the middle school auditorium, from Integrated Theater systems, at a cost of $7,118.

Payment for the items, which will replace original lights, will come from the capital reserve fund.

Director Ron Steele opposed the purchase.

Donations ranging from original works of fine art, pottery and photography to knitwear and jewelry are featured in the high school art club's online art auction, which is under way and will continue through the annual Renaissance 2 Revival Art Show April 25-27.

The online auction is a fundraiser for the art club. It was set up by high school art teacher Carol DeWitt as a creative approach to funding after budget cuts affected school art departments.

The event has received support from West Allegheny alumni, the community through donated items and an education grant from the Grable Foundation.

Donations of auction items are still being accepted. Individuals or businesses interested in donating artwork can visit www.westasd.org. New items will continue to be added to the auction site, http://auctions.readysetauction.com/westalleghenyartclub/.
