Oakdale council members tonight expressed opposition to rezoning property next to the Panhandle Trail for development of a Dollar General, a bank and a retail strip mall.
Tom Robinson, owner of the former Joy Dog Food factory site, proposed an 18,500-square-foot retail development with 100 parking spaces at the corner of Union and Center avenues.
The borough would have to rezone the industrial portion of the property to accommodate the plan. But council members said the development would compete too much with the town's two existing sections of mostly small and independently owned businesses.
"The last thing we want to do is kill the business we have already," Councilman Bud Sturgeon said. "That's why we want other options explored."
Council tabled the issue until next month.
