A group of parents told the West Allegheny school board tonight they want to reinstate the eighth-grade baseball team.
Joe Diven of Findlay said the baseball boosters have discussed funding the program, and if so, the district should restore the team to help keep youth occupied with positive activities.
"It's more baseball, it's more time off the street," Mr. Diven said.
Coach Bill Priddy of North Fayette said about 20 eighth-graders normally joined each spring season.
To save money, the district had eliminated the $8,500 program from the 2012-13 budget and also had begun charging participation fees for all sports and extracurricular activities.
Board president Debbie Mirich said eight-graders still may participate in the school-sponsored junior-high baseball team and in community-run summer baseball leagues.
She said board members would discuss the matter with athletic director Dave McBain and determine if they want to look further into the issue.
