A former Duquesne football star who played for the University of Pittsburgh was sentenced Tuesday to nine years in federal prison for selling heroin.

Shane Brooks, 26, of Duquesne, had been indicted in June 2012 and pleaded guilty in March in U.S. District Court.

Federal agents said he conspired to sell heroin from 2010 until January 2012.

Mr. Brooks had once been among the state's top football recruits as a running back. He played for two years at Pitt on a football scholarship, then transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
