A Clairton police officer shot a man during a traffic stop this afternoon.
Two City of Clairton officers observed a man they knew to be wanted by police -- Anthony Jefferson, 28, of Clairton -- driving a car with expired registration and inspection around 4:20 p.m. and attempted to stop the car, Allegheny County homicide unit Lt. Andrew Schurman said.
Mr. Jefferson lost control of his car near Jefferson Drive and 9th Street and tried to flee the scene as the officers approached him, Lt. Schurman said. He then turned a pistol toward the officers, the lieutenant said.
One of the officers fired at the man, hitting him twice in the arm, Lt. Schurman said. Mr. Jefferson entered the woods, but surrendered shortly after and was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for non-life threatening wounds, he said.
Mr. Jefferson's firearm was recovered, and he will be charged with weapons violations, fleeing from police and traffic violations, Lt. Schurman said.
After the county police complete an investigation, the District Attorney's office will review the incident, he said.
