A Fayette County man has been charged with sexually assaulting two young girls over a span of five years.
James Johns, 33, of Smithfield, was arraigned today on four counts of rape and two counts of sexual assault. His bail was set at $50,000, according to court records.
The charges are related to a 4- or 5-year-old girl who police say was raped in 2008 or 2009, as well as a 6- or 7-year-old girl who police say was raped in 2011 or 2012. Pennsylvania State Police said the attacks involving the younger girl occurred at Mr. Johns' home in Smithfield.
Police said she was at Mr. Johns' home in 2008 or 2009 playing with his son when she went into her friend's room to change her clothes. According to the criminal complaint, he came into the room and assaulted her. She started to scream, and he told her to be quiet and not to tell anyone about what had happened.
A state police news release said the older girl was assaulted at another residence, in Georges Township.
Mr. Johns faces a preliminary hearing Tuesday.
