A 59-year-old jitney driver carrying a fare was fatally shot at a housing complex in McKeesport shortly after midnight today, Allegheny County police said.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the man as John Haas of McKeesport.
Mr. Haas was shot once in the head as he was leaving Crawford Village about 12:10 a.m. Mr. Haas later died at a local hospital, Lt. Andrew Schurman of the county police homicide unit said in a press release.
Police do not believe Mr. Haas was the intended target, noting his vehicle closely resembles that of a gang member who may be involved in ongoing shootings in the area, Lt. Schurman said.
Police know of three other shootings in the McKeesport area earlier Tuesday evening in which no one was injured.
McKeesport police Capt. Tim Hanna said no one was actually shot in those earlier incidents, and police don't know if specific people were targeted.
McKeesport police believe those shootings are part of an ongoing dispute between rival drug organizations, Lt. Schurman said.
Police ask anyone with information to call the county homicide unit at 412-473-1300.
