A former Allegheny County police officer has been ordered to stand trial in a hit-and-run death after waiving a preliminary hearing on the charges.
The defense attorney for 64-year-old Timothy Tatters, of White Oak, said there is no evidence to show that Tatters knew he had struck a human being in McKeesport about 4 a.m. on Jan. 16.
Authorities accused Tatters struck 56-year-old Lorraine Wilkes with his Jeep Cherokee. She died soon after at a local hospital.
Investigators don't believe Tatters' claim that he thought he hit a dog -- in part because Wilkes reportedly weighed about 320 pounds.
Tatters is charged with an accident involving death, a felony, and careless driving. He waived his hearing on the charges Monday.
Police said Tatters retired from the force in 1993.
