The teenage boy accused of shooting a 6-year-old boy outside a Redstone housing complex last week surrendered to state police today.

Deago Eddings, 16, arrived at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Moon shortly before 1 p.m. accompanied by his mother, Missy Grooms, and attorney, Blaine Jones.

Deago has been charged as an adult with attempted homicide and other crimes stemming from a shooting near the Hunters Ridge complex on July 3.

State police wrote in a criminal complaint that Deago shot the boy in the chest. The boy remains at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, Trooper Robin Mungo, a spokeswoman for the state police, said.

Deago cried quietly while his attorney described how difficult it was for him to surrender.

"He's hurting," Mr. Jones said of his client. "He turned himself in, and that takes a lot of courage."

Deago remains at the barracks in Moon in the custody of state troopers, who plan to transport him back to Fayette County for arraignment this afternoon.
