A memorial service for the Slippery Rock University graduate who died last week at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., will be held tonight in the Zelienople native's hometown.
Frank Kohler will be remembered in a 6 p.m. service at the English Lutheran Church at 200 E. Grandview Ave., according to details posted on the Boylan Funeral Home website. The burial will be private.
The 50-year-old Tall Timbers, Md., resident was one of 12 people killed Sept. 16 by a gunman who attacked a building at the Washington Navy Yard.
The 34-year-old gunman, Aaron Alexis, was killed by police at the scene.
Mr. Kohler, born Sept. 22, 1962, was the son of Raymond and Patricia "Jean" Kohler of Zelienople, according to the obituary posted on the Boylan website.
He graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in computer science in 1985 and worked as a subject matter expert for the Navy Marine Corps Intranet Project.
He is survived by his parents; his wife, Michelle; his daughters, Meghan and Alexandra of Lynchburg, Va.; his brother, Harvey Kohler of Zelienople; and his sisters, Patricia Grubbs of Evans City, Carolyn Huttinger of Zelienople and Rhoda Kohler of Greencastle.
