A Moon man was held for court today on homicide by vehicle and related offenses in a hit-and-run death last month in Leetsdale.
Shontelle Harvey, 41, also was charged with driving under the influence in the Aug. 18 death of Charles Britt, 67, of Penn Hills. Mr. Harvey remains in the Allegheny County Jail.
Police in Leetsdale responded to a report that a person had been struck on the berm of the southbound lanes of Ohio River Boulevard at about 3 a.m.
A witness later told police she saw a man standing next to a parked car that was on the berm of the road. According to a police criminal complaint, she said another vehicle passed them on the right and she heard "a loud thud and thought to herself that the vehicle must have struck the man."
The vehicle kept going, she told police, and she and her passenger stopped to help the man, who they said had been struck and appeared "lifeless." Police said damage and blood on the vehicles revealed Mr. Britt had been struck and trapped between the two of them.
Another witness told police that Mr. Britt was a jitney driver. He got out of the vehicle that morning to remove one of his fares after an argument started, the complaint continues, but ultimately decided to leave her in the vehicle. He went back to the driver's side and was hit by an SUV, police said.
Witnesses described the vehicle of the hit-and-run driver and Sewickley police spotted it.
Mr. Harvey told police he had been drinking that night and was already on probation and didn't want to stop, even though he though he knew he hit something and was "uncertain if it was the parked car or the man," police wrote in the complaint.
