Students wave to each other as they enter Shaler Area Middle School this morning.
Students arrive this morning on a school bus round at the entrance of Shaler Area Middle School along Mount Royal Boulevard.
After what amounted to an extended summer vacation, students in the Shaler Area School District returned to classes this morning.
The teacher strike that delayed the start of school, originally scheduled for Sept. 3, ended Wednesday when union and the district reached an agreement on health care contributions and workload.
They also agreed to binding arbitration on the union's request for salary scale increases. Teachers returned to work on Thursday.
A statement on the district's website asks families to be flexible during the first several days of the school year. Officials advise students to arrive at bus stops a few minutes early and be prepared for buses to run slowly.
Bus stops at Grant and Sedgwick, Grant and Butler, and Grant and Sheridan will move to Lincoln and Sedgwick, Lincoln and Butler and Lincoln and Sheridan today only, because of the Millvale Days festival, the district said.
