North Fayette is taking steps toward acquiring a police dog next year.

The township plans to to pursue funding for a K-9 in 2014 through local business fundraising and a grant application to the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation, officials said tonight.

Cpl. Todd Heufelder has volunteered to work with the canine and has researched the issue, Chief Mark O'Donnell said.

All three supervisors supported the effort. "I think it's going to be a great asset to the department," vice chairman James R. Mangan said.

Neighboring towns with police dogs include Findlay, Heidelberg, Robinson and Scott.
