Nicholas Starr, 24, has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing his ex-girlfriend, then turning the handgun on himself at a Reserve home, authorities said.
Starr, of Pittsburgh's East End, died at Allegheny General Hospital late Tuesday night, the county medical examiner's office said.
Police said he shot himself after shooting Alisha Virtue, 25, whose body they found in the bathroom of a home in the 3400 block of Spring Garden Avenue, a home she shared with her mother, sister and young son.
Ms. Virtue died from a gunshot wound to the head, the medical examiner's office said in ruling her death a homicide.
A neighbor said the couple had broken up Monday.
Investigators said Ms. Virtue's mother, sister and son were not home at the time of the shooting. Police said the three left the house Tuesday morning and returned home around 5 p.m.
When they entered the house, they heard the shower running upstairs and thought Ms. Virtue was getting ready for work. After several minutes, they went upstairs and pushed open the bathroom door to find Ms. Virtue's body in the shower and Starr slumped against the door, according to police.
Police said they recovered a handgun at the scene.
A next-door neighbor returned home soon after Ms. Virtue's body was discovered.
"[I] went out for about 15 minutes," the neighbor said. "Come home and the mother and the sister were in the yard, hysterical. We ran over to see what was going on and they said, 'She's shot! She's shot!'"
Ms. Virtue's relatives told police Starr was at the house Tuesday morning before they left for the day and everything seemed to be fine between them.
