Mars Area school board members Monday approved a $24,625 change order for the contractor building a driveway to Mars Area Elementary School.
Board member Bonnie Weaver said Tedesco Construction Co. came across some "soft spots" in the dirt as they were grading for the road.
Three of the spots are "major" and are deeper than a foot from the grade of the road, Mrs. Weaver said.
"You can keep digging down until you find good soil," she said. But she recommended having the contractor put a heavy duty mesh over the spots, then applying the aggregate and paving for the road.
It is a "safer and more cost-effective way to go," Mrs. Weaver said.
The original contract with Tedesco was for $686,200.
The access road will begin at Three Degree Road and run along the back of the elementary school before connecting with the road in front of the administration building on Route 228. It will be named Doc's Way in honor of retiring Superintendent William Pettigrew.
