When a 26-year-old wandered to take photos today at McConnells Mill State Park, he slipped from a rock ledge and landed in the water 15 to 20 feet below.
The man from the Youngstown, Ohio, area was taken by helicopter to the hospital, said Jake Weiland, assistant manager at the Moraine State Park complex, which manages the adjacent McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County.
In the Kildoo Falls area, the man ventured from the designated area for visitors, to take photos, Mr. Weiland said. The visitor then slipped from a rock ledge into a small tributary.
"There is a lot of difficult terrain, and we have designated trails, rock climbing and photo areas that we strongly encourage people to use when visiting," Mr. Weiland said, adding that most accidents occur when people deviate from those designated areas.
Portersville, Shenango and Slippery Rock township volunteer fire departments responded, as well as Portersville EMS and state police.
The park was withholding the man's name until his family was notified.
