A significant portion of the Cranberry business district is without landline telephone or internet service today.

The outages began at about 5 p.m. Friday when work crews installing a utility line in the vicinity of Freedom Road and Executive Drive severed a main underground communication line.

Workers for Kirby Electric, a subcontractor of Consolidated Communications, said early today that they have been working around the clock to restore service.

The workers said they hope to have the system repaired by late tonight.

The impacts of the outages were widespread, radiating from the main business district at the corner of Routes 19 and 228. For example, most business could not be transacted at local banks; Giant Eagle at the Cranberry Mall along Route 19 was unable to fill prescriptions or accept debit or gift cards; and businesses using landline phones were unable to make calls or to access the internet.

Cranberry Manager Jerry Andree said the incident occurred while a contractor for the township was installing a water line along Executive Drive.
