Some Ross Township residents may soon see their recycling collected by a robotic arm.
Commissioners Monday agreed to opt into township-wide recycling with Waste Management where it is feasible.
With automated collections, a robotic arm picks up the can and dumps the contents into the truck. Workers do not get out of the truck.
Commission Chairman Grant Montgomery said automated pickup will not be feasible in some areas that have a lot of on-street parking. In those cases, the cans will have to lifted and dumped manually by workers.
Other municipalities, including McCandless and Ohio Township, already use automated collections for trash, yard waste and recycling.
