When the North Hills High School football team begins the 2013 season, someone other than Jack McCurry will be coach for the first time since the 1970s.
But the new coach is quite familiar with the program.
Pat Carey was named North Hills' coach tonight. Carey, 42, played at North Hills and has been a North Hills assistant coach for 19 years, the past 15 as defensive coordinator. McCurry retired last month as the third-winningest coach in WPIAL history with 281 wins and also four WPIAL championships.
Carey said he believes most of North Hills' coaching staff will remain the same.
"We have good, quality coaches in the [high school] building and that's important," Carey said. "I'll continue to stay with the defense. On offense, just for continuity, there are going to be schemes that might look similar to what we did in the past. But I'm going to have my imprint on the offense also and it's going to have to fit the personnel we have. I think one of the things Jack always did well was fit the offense to his personnel."
