Commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance Monday setting the property tax rate at 2.7 mills -- a reduction of 0.3 mill. The new rate allows the township to stay within the 5 percent "windfall" allowed after a reassessment.

They also approved the purchase of five trucks and two mowers for a total cost of $360,000. The purchases were included in the 2013 budget, said Mike Funk, director of public works. The current trucks and mowers all date from the 1990s and have needed a lot of repairs, he added.

• Commissioners are accepting applicants for a vacancy on the planning commission. Daniel Harasyn resigned Jan. 8 for health reasons. The application deadline is 9 a.m. Feb. 1. The appointment will be made Feb. 4.

• Commissioners appointed new manager Douglas Sample as a township representative to the Congress of Neighboring Communities. They also made appointments to a new committee that will study ways to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. Fire Chiefs Brad McLean of the Quaill fire department and Jeff Giger of the Evergreen fire department will serve with Commissioners John Sponcer and David Mikec.
