Free Thanksgiving dinners served
St. Barnabas Charities will offer free turkey dinners Thanksgiving day at the two nursing homes operated by St. Barnabas Health System.
Meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the dining room of St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 5827 Meridian Road, Richland, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the dining room at Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas, 85 Charity Place, Valencia.
Reservations can be made but are not necessary by calling the nursing home, 724-443-0700, or Valencia Woods, 724-625-4000.
Free Christmas dinners also will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at both facilities.
Bell ringers needed
The Gibsonia Salvation Army kettle drive needs volunteers for an hour or two to collect holiday donations at the Wal-Mart on Route 8.
The times and dates are noon to 8 p.m. Dec. 7, noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 8, noon to 8 p.m. Dec. 14, noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 15, noon to 8 p.m. Dec. 21 and noon to 6 p.m. Dec. 22.

Volunteers are need at St. Barnabas Hospice to help terminally ill patients and their families.
Individuals visit hospice patients throughout St. Barnabas' campuses to support families with conversation and services such as light housekeeping and errands. Opportunities for volunteering with clerical duties in the office also are available.
A free training program will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at The Woodlands Lodge, 200 Lodge Lane, Valencia.
The training program will cover an introduction to hospice care; education on death, dying and grief; and developing communication and support skills. Accommodations can be made for those who cannot attend.

St. Barnabas Hospice is operated by St. Barnabas Medical Center to support terminally ill patients and their families. Services include pain management and care for the patient's physical needs plus counseling and support for the patient's family members.
Peebles Road closing
Starting at 7 a.m. Tuesday, drain pipe installation will close a section of Peebles Road between Hemlock and Presidential drives. The road will remain closed through early January.
The detour is Hemlock, Babcock Boulevard and Duncan Avenue.
About 3,228 vehicles use this section of Peebles on an average day. The contractor for the work is Allison Park Contractors Inc.
Holiday parade to be held Saturday
A Magical Wonderland in Lights is the theme of the Spirit of Christmas parade featuring more than 60 units, including bands, soldiers who have returned home from active duty, civic organizations, scout groups, businesses, the Pirate Parrot and Santa. It starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday on Main Street and will travel through the heart of town.
It's the first nighttime parade and the floats will be decorated with twinkling lights.
The event kicks off the holiday shopping season in the city.
Small Business Saturday will begin the day with retailers offering sales and discounts for shoppers. The parade will be followed at 7 p.m. with light-up night festivities.
Run for NCHO
North Hills Community Outreach is recruiting runners and committee members for the Dick's Sporting Goods 2013 Pittsburgh Marathon.
Runners can run the relay, 5K, half marathon or full marathon to raise funds for the agency.
