The 1300 block of Roosevelt Road will be closed after 9:30 a.m. today during an evacuation drill involving more than 700 students and staff at Avonworth Elementary School.
Ohio Township police and fire officials have organized the drill to prepare for a real emergency. The evacuation will enable school occupants to be familiar with how to vacate the building in a safe and orderly manner.
Police Chief Norbert Micklos said the drill will be a joint training for public safety officials in the community.
"Our emergency responders have to continually adapt and train for myriad school threats impacting our children," he said in a news release. "I feel this exercise will benefit the community and illustrate cooperation between multiple agencies, thus maintaining a safer learning environment for our children."
The police and fire departments will close Roosevelt Road between Mount Nebo and Crawford roads during the evacuation drill.
Students will vacate the elementary school and walk to the fire hall under the supervision of elementary staff and police officers. Students with special needs will be transported on buses.
In the event of inclement weather, the drill will be conducted Wednesday.
