Slippery Rock University officials said a 21-year-old student collapsed at Morrow Field House during the basketball team's pre-season conditioning late Friday and died Saturday.
Jack Hill Jr., of Roselle, N.J., was a senior information technology major who was in training so he could attempt to walk on to the team this season. He tried out last season and did not make the team, but stayed on in "an unofficial managerial role," handing out water and towels to teammates during games, said Bob McComas, a spokesman for the athletic department.
Mr. Hill lost consciousness during conditioning on Friday night. Coaching staff performed CPR until the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department arrived. He was then transported to Grove City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
Mr. McComas said that an autopsy has been performed but no cause of death has been determined. Investigators are still awaiting results of toxicology reports.
Visitation for Mr. Hill is Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in Rahway, N.J. A funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the same church. The athletic department is arranging for a bus to transport students to the services.
The school is also arranging a memorial service on campus for Mr. Hill and for 21-year-old John Tyler Stufflebeam, an education major from Warren, Pa., who died in a car accident Saturday. The service has not been scheduled yet, but Mr. McComas said it will likely occur sometime this week.
