Jeannette has a new treasurer. Attorney Michael Nestico was sworn in as city treasurer Monday at city hall.
Mr. Nestico, 31, was appointed by council in July to fill the unexpired term of former treasurer Sam Casino, who resigned in June.
Mr. Nestico, a political newcomer who won the Republican nod for the office in the primary after a write-in campaign, was to run against Mr. Casino, a Democrat, for the post in the November general election. The two may still compete for the position as Mr. Casino, a three-term incumbent, has not withdrawn his name from the ballot.
Council previously hired Mr. Nestico, who was born and raised in Jeannette, to collect unpaid garbage bills. While working with the treasurer, Mr. Nestico said, he thought he could make improvements in the running of the office. He said he decided to throw his hat into ring after learning that no Republican was interested in taking on the incumbent office holder.
"It was too late to be on the primary ballot, so I decided to run a write-in campaign for the nomination," he said. "When Sam [Casino] resigned, I was surprised. I didn't see it coming. I didn't know anybody who did."
Mr. Nestico will be paid about $25,000 annually, which will be split among city, school district and county since the treasurer collects taxes for all three governing bodies.
Mr. Nestico is a graduate of Penn State University and the Western New England University School of Law. He is the son of Jeannette natives Lanny Nestico, owner of The Nest restaurant in the city's downtown, and Lois D'Orazio, who works for state Sen. Kim Ward, R-Hempfield.
Since taking the oath, Mr. Nestico said, he has been familiarizing himself with the office operations and plans to be there daily. He said he plans to maintain his law practice in the evenings doing estate work.
"I want to be actively involved and I will try to improve the office," he said.
In the meantime, he said, he will continue to campaign for the treasurer's post, although he is not sure who he will face in the November election.
