• Michael Campayno of Forest Hills, a student at Carnegie Mellon University, is spending his summer performing in the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's production of "Side by Side by Sondheim," which plays through Aug. 18 at CLO Cabaret. Mr. Campayno is an understudy for the lead male role.
Mr. Campayno won the Gene Kelly Award in 2008 for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gaston in Central Catholic's production of "Beauty and the Beast." His Pittsburgh CLO productions include "Jekyll and Hyde," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Love Changes Everything" and "Sound of Music" as well as the North Shore Musical Theatre production of "All Shook Up" and CLO Cabaret's "S'Wonderful."
• Wei Mon Lu, a senior at Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport, Miranda Campbell, a senior at Ligonier Valley High School in Ligonier, and Benjamin G. Robel of New Kensington, who is home schooled, have each won $5,000 Horatio Alger Scholarships. Students are chosen for academics, community service and character.
The scholarship organization has awarded almost $100 million to nearly 20,000 scholars since the inception of its scholarships in 1984.
• Jennifer Jackson, a first-grade student at Colfax Elementary in the Pittsburgh schools, has been selected to participate in the C-MITES Summer Program for academically talented students. Jennifer, daughter of Anne Jackson of Squirrel Hill, will attend the Ecosystem Science class in mid-June.
