State police in Bedford are investigating an ATV accident at the Bedford County Dirt Drags that caused the death of a 15-year-old boy.
Police have not identified the victim, but a press release said troopers were called to the race track at about 9 p.m. Saturday to investigate an accident in which a juvenile driver lost control of his vehicle, struck the tire barrier on the side of the track and flipped the ATV while participating in a race.
The driver was then thrown from the vehicle and struck a light pole on the side of the track. Medical personnel on the scene attempted to treat the victim, but were not successful. Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as a factor in the crash.
Bill Ickes, president of the Blair-Bedford Dirt Racers Inc. club, which sponsored the race, identified the deceased driver as Kaleb Rightenour.
Mr. Ickes said Kaleb participated in a previous race at the track this year and at races last year.
He said the fatality was the first in 28 years of races at the track.
"This is not an easy thing to deal with. It's the last thing you ever think will happen," Mr. Ickes said.
He said the races involve two drivers racing side-by-side on a straight-line track. Saturday's race included nearly 300 racers ranging in age from 5-year-olds to seniors and about 300 spectators.
