A McKeesport police officer was injured while trying to stop a man from reentering a burning home this afternoon, police said.
McKeesport Captain of Detectives Tim Hanna said the officer, who he did not want to name, fell on the wooden deck of the house on Long Run Road and injured his back. There were no other injuries reported.
The fire was reported about 2:33 p.m., according to an Allegheny County emergency dispatch supervisor. After officers responded to the scene, a man made two attempts to go back into the home, once in the front and again in the back. The officer was trying to stop the man from his second try when the officer fell, Capt. Hanna said.
The blaze was under control by 3:14 p.m. It was not immediately clear how much damage the house sustained or why the man was trying reenter the home.
The officer is expected to recover and was getting tests done Wednesday afternoon at UPMC McKeesport.
