An East Liberty woman fended off an attacker who overnight broke into her apartment, punched her and threatened to sexually assault her, Pittsburgh police said today.

Sex assault detectives were looking for the assailant, who entered the victim's second-story apartment around 3:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Negley Avenue, according to police.

Investigators believe the man went up a fire escape and through an open window, Lt. Daniel Herrmann said.

He punched the woman in the face -- "He beat her up pretty good," the lieutenant said -- before she managed to fight him off and escape through her front door.

The woman, whose age was not available, screamed for help, and someone called police, Lt. Herrmann said.

No description of the man was immediately available.

Lt. Herrmann said the woman did not know her attacker.

The assailant is facing charges of burglary, aggravated assault and indecent assault.
