A man was shot and his brother was beaten with a baseball bat in an early morning incident today in Carrick.

City police Commander Thomas Stangrecki said the incident occurred at 1:24 a.m. in the 2000 block of Brownsville Road. Both men were treated for their injuries at UPMC Mercy then were released.

A news release from police indicated that a 44-year-old man who resides at the shooting scene had been shot in the shoulder and his 40-year-old brother from Mount Washington had been beaten in the head with a baseball bat.

A third person, a 45-year-old man, was in the apartment at the time of the incident but was asleep and not injured.

The 40-year-old told police he was sitting outside his brother's apartment, waiting for a ride from his wife and talking on the phone when two young, black males approached, one asking for a cigarette while the other continued to walk along the street. The 40-year-old man told police that as he stood to give the young man a cigarette, one of the suspects pulled a handgun, directed the victim into the apartment hallway, then demanded that the victim "give it up," at which point the victim threw $40 in cash onto the ground. When the suspect reached down for the money, the victim told police he ran up a staircase to his brother's apartment, then into the bedroom of his brother, who police identified as the 44-year-old victim. As the 44-year-old sat up in bed, he was shot in the upper shoulder. Meantime, the 40-year-old grabbed a baseball bat that was beside his brother's bed in an attempt to defend himself and his brother but the bat was wrested away and used by the assailant to beat the 40-year-old.

No arrests have been made.
