Two men will stand trial on charges that they stormed a "party bus" that stopped in Sheraden this spring and then fatally shot a man who got off, a judge ruled Friday.
James Lawrence, 21, of the East Hills and Michael Lyons, 22, of Homewood each face charges of homicide, conspiracy and a gun violation in the March 30 shooting death of Steven Lee, 21, of McKees Rocks. Contacted Friday, their attorneys declined to comment in detail about the charges their clients face.
Pittsburgh homicide detectives wrote in a criminal complaint that Clarrissa Clark, 19, Summer Kerley, 29, both of Sheraden, and Samantha Powe, 30, of Garfield boarded the bus in the South Side and began arguing with people on board who were celebrating a birthday.
While they were on the bus, Ms. Powe called someone and said, "You need to come over and smoke these people," according to the complaint.
"These people" referred to Mr. Lee and his sister, police said.
Ms. Clark was also on the phone and asked the driver to stop in Sheraden, at which point Mr. Lawrence, Mr. Lyons and a third man arrived, according to the complaint.
Police said Mr. Lawrence and Mr. Lyons got on the bus, where Mr. Lawrence pointed a gun at Mr. Lee's sister and escorted her off. Mr. Lyons stood outside the bus and Mr. Lee also made his way off the bus, police have said.
Then, detectives wrote, Ms. Clark told Mr. Lyons and Mr. Lawrence, "Spank them. I want those two," and they opened fire, fatally shooting Mr. Lee.
Mr. Lee's sister was not injured.
Ms. Clark and Ms. Kerley were arrested in Ohio Thursday on charges that they solicited the killing.
Ms. Powe was found shot to death on a dead-end street in Homewood last month. Charges have not been filed in that case, but sources say Mr. Lawrence is a suspect.
Mr. Lawrence has also been charged with killing Tiona Jackson, a 28-year-old nurse and mother of six, outside Red's Bar in Beltzhoover Feb. 28. A preliminary hearing in that case has been postponed until Sept. 13.
Robert Carey Jr., the attorney representing Mr. Lawrence in the Sheraden shooting death, said only that he looked forward to challenging the charges at trial.neigh_city
