Pittsburgh officials are investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a Lawrenceville salon and the two apartments above it early this morning.

Firefighters were called to 5112 Butler St. about 3:15 a.m. for the two-alarm blaze.

Chief Darryl Jones said in a news release that police were attempting to knock open the front door when a person in the second-floor apartment awoke and was then able to leave the smoke-filled building. Medics transported that person to a local hospital to be evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Chief Jones estimated that it did about $85,000 worth of damage to the building, which did not have working smoke detectors.
