A man was injured today in the third shooting reported in an East Hills housing complex in 24 hours.
Two people were talking in front of a home on the 2300 block of East Hills Drive in the Second East Hills housing complex around 5:30 p.m. A third party walked up to them and shot one of the men in the thigh, Pittsburgh police Sgt. Tom Huerbin said.
A struggle ensued and the men crashed through the front door of a home there, where four more shots were fired, he said. During the commotion, a pot that had been on the stove there caught fire and was extinguished. Inside the residence, police found drugs and drug paraphernalia, he said, leading to two drug-related arrests.
The man who had been shot ran past a group who had been cooking out Tuesday afternoon, leaving a trail of blood on the sidewalk.
"I thought he had red pants on," said Aleia Smith, 24, of Stanton Heights. She said she heard between six and eight gun shots.
The shooting victim left the East Hills area by vehicle. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where he is undergoing surgery and is expected to live.
The suspect and victim are believed to know each other, although the man who was shot was not cooperating with police, the sergeant said.
This is the third shooting in the complex in 24 hours, but the first reported injury, Sgt. Huerbin said. Police patrols have been increased as crime in the area has gotten worse lately, he said.
"[The complex] looks good, but it's still the old place it used to be," he said.
