A Downtown man was arrested today on charges that he drove under the influence in a Pittsburgh Public Schools van.
William Jester, 36, also faces a charge of reckless driving. He is awaiting arraignment.
Detectives with the Allegheny County district attorney's office spotted Mr. Jester driving in the van as he swerved across lanes of traffic while he drove on Browns Hill Road, 376 West and then to a school building at 12th and Muriel streets on the South Side, according to a criminal complaint. They called 911 while they followed him and then waited for a Pittsburgh police officer to arrive.
A breath test for alcohol didn't show intoxication but police said they suspect that Mr. Jester might have been under the influence of a medication or narcotic.
There were no children in the van at the time.
A school district spokeswoman declined to immediately comment, saying the investigation was still ongoing. It was not immediately clear whether Mr. Jester is an employee of the school district or of a contractor.
