The pickup truck that plunged off an overpass near the Liberty Bridge onto Second Avenue last week had defective brakes, police confirmed Wednesday.
The day after the crash, the driver told investigators that just before 7:30 p.m. on July 24, he hit his brakes while driving down Crosstown Boulevard. When his brakes didn't work, he attempted to slow himself on a Jersey barrier and ended up falling onto Second Avenue, said Sgt. Daniel Connolly of the Pittsburgh Police collision investigations unit.
An investigation confirmed the driver's account was true, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said.
Three people in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and a fourth was seriously injured, but not critically.
