A former Central Catholic High School guidance counselor pleaded guilty this morning to drug charges and fraud in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court.
Kelly M. Scherer, 36, will serve two years probation for felony counts of possession of heroin and possession with intent to distribute as well as fraud for submitting falsified time cards regarding time she was supposed to spend tutoring students.
During a hearing before Judge David R. Cashman, Ms. Scherer apologized for her actions and said heroin has ruined her life.
Defense attorney Patrick Thomassey said his client thought she could help her boyfriend beat his habit, but instead she became addicted, too.
She recently spent a month in rehab.
She received probation, he said, because she had no prior criminal record.
But, Mr. Thomassey continued, her career in education is over. She was fired from the school, where she had worked for 12 years, upon arrest.
"Her career in most things is terminated," he said.
