Pittsburgh City Council gave a tearful farewell today to Councilman Patrick Dowd, who announced he would resign to head a new child advocacy group.
Mr. Dowd, 45, cast his last votes as a councilman this morning and plans to hand in his resignation letter tomorrow evening. He will start as the executive director for Allies for Children on July 22.
At his final council meeting, Council President Darlene Harris, who gave the councilman a proclamation, ribbed the councilman for once calling a colleague a fascist and for his spirited demeanor in council chambers.
"I'm going to miss debating you," she said.
A former Pittsburgh school board member, he was elected to council in 2008 and represented District 7, which includes Highland Park, Stanton Heights, Lawrenceville and the Strip District.
