Expanded police patrols in the South Side entertainment district will not begin this weekend because the program isn't ready yet, Cmdr. Catherine McNeilly said Wednesday.
Cmdr. McNeilly said the program would be delayed by no more than two weeks.
Police and the South Side Bar and Restaurant Association have been working on a program that would have off-duty police officers who are working private security details team with on-duty officers to patrol the district. Previously, off-duty security officers would stay in front of the business that hired them, but under the new program, they would patrol the area under the police department's supervision.
The patrols are one element of a program recommended by the Responsible Hospitality Institute, which was hired last year after ongoing friction among residents, bar owners and bar patrons in the neighborhood.
