The Zoning Board of Adjustment has approved a proposed renovation of a former whiskey distillery on McKean Street on the South Side into a 13-unit apartment building in a decision announced today.

The site, also known as the American Machinists Building, is near the River Walk Corporate Center off East Carson Street.

A special exception was granted for the proposed housing because it is in an urban industrial zoning district and to add another story to the building. The board also granted a variance for lack of a setback for three visitors' parking stalls. Each unit will have its own parking stall.

Representatives of the owner, Whiskey Flats LP, declined comment.

The proposed development is pending a hearing before the city planning commission.
