A 51-year-old homeless man is in critical condition after being stabbed multiple times in Uptown early today, Pittsburgh police said.

Two people walking down Fifth Avenue near Stevenson Street found the man on the ground and covered in blood near a Port Authority bus shelter shortly after 3 a.m., police said.

Officers found the man unconscious, police said. He was taken to UPMC Mercy with stab wounds to his head, neck and chest, police said. Police believe he was stabbed on Watson Street, where they found blood.

The man, whose address was an Uptown homeless shelter, remained in the intensive care unit today. He was conscious, but Pittsburgh police homicide detectives, who are investigating the case, were unable to speak to him today.
