The journalist and syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman has cancelled her Nov. 5 appearance at the Literary Evenings lecture slated for Monday, the eve of the presidential election.

Ms. Goodman planned to discuss how to have civil conversations about political differences.

Ms. Goodman's sister is gravely ill and is not expected to recover, said Jayne Adair, executive director of the series, which presents 10 well-known authors each season at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.

"Ellen understandably must remain with her," Ms. Adair said. "Ellen is very disappointed about the cancellation and is working with me to reschedule her lecture later this season."

All tickets purchased for the Nov. 5 lecture will be valid for the author's rescheduled appearance.

Ms. Adair said she regretted the cancellation and apologized for any inconvenience.
