The Pittsburgh Housing Authority board voted today to steer $3.5 million to a planned redevelopment of low-income housing that would bridge a revived East Liberty and a still-struggling Larimer.
The $3.5 million allows the authority to move residents out of the 28-unit Auburn/Hamilton-Larimer apartments, built in 1964, and then begin to demolish them and prepare the site for new housing.
The authority plans to apply for a federal Choice Neighborhoods grant and is seeking low-income housing tax credits. If those funding bids are successful, the authority plans to work with the Urban Redevelopment Authority to combine the site with the nearby East Liberty Gardens apartment complex and build a new, 155-home mixed-income community.
East Liberty Gardens is next to East Liberty's Target store.
"This would be the beginning of continuing the total transformation, bringing the East Liberty development right into the Larimer core," said Ricky Burgess, chairman of the authority board and also the city councilman for Larimer.
The authority expects to work with developer McCormack Baron Salazar, of St. Louis. The URA is working with Columbus, Ohio-based KBK Enterprises, Mr. Burgess said.
