A woman has been charged with carjacking a newspaper delivery van early Wednesday while its driver was making her rounds on the South Side.

A 57-year-old Bethel Park woman told police she was driving the van for Renaissance News about 4:20 a.m. when she stopped to make a delivery in the 1800 block of East Carson Street. As she walked behind the van, a woman wearing a blue bandanna on her head got into the driver's seat and sped off, Pittsburgh police said.

Duquesne University police officers soon spotted the van driving down the bus lane on Fifth Avenue and tried to stop it.

As more Duquesne officers arrived, the van briefly stopped and then reversed into one of their cruisers.

Officers pulled the driver, identified as Chaqua Renea Locke, 24, from the vehicle and arrested her. Pittsburgh police charged Ms. Locke with robbery of a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle and traffic crimes.

Officers said she told them she was almost hit by the newspaper delivery van "so [the driver] deserved to have it taken."
