Two men were arrested on drug charges Wednesday morning after Allegheny County sheriff's deputies said they spotted them in a car driving erratically on the Parkway East between Uptown and Squirrel Hill.

Deputies said Kevin Arenth, 19, of Plum, and Alexander Maiullo, 24, of Mt. Lebanon, had "glassy eyes" and abnormal speech when deputies pulled them over, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.

As the driver, Mr. Arenth, was looking in his car for his registration and other information, deputies spotted a bag with white pills sitting in the car's cupholder, the complaint said. Deputies said they searched the car and found a generic brand of Xanax pills, a "large amount" of marijuana and close to $1,000 in cash.

Mr. Arenth told deputies he didn't expect that they would find anything illegal in the car and that his speech was mumbled because he had previously been shot in the mouth. Asked later about the pills, he said, "What pills? There ain't no pills in the car. I smoke weed," according to the complaint.

Deputies took Mr. Arenth to a local hospital for blood testing.

Both he and Mr. Maiullo were arraigned shortly before midnight. Mr. Arenth was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving, prohibited acts, drug possession and possesion with intent to deliver, according to court records. Mr. Maiullo, who denied that any pills were his, was charged with possession and prohibited acts.

Both were released on nonmonetary bond and are due in court Jan. 17 for a preliminary hearing.

Wednesday evening.
