West Penn Allegheny Health System has invited upwards of 200 donors, physicians and public officials to an event Friday for an announcement about "expanding medical education in Pittsburgh," spokeswoman Kelly Sorice said Saturday.
Ms. Sorice would not confirm whether the presentation by Christopher Olivia, the hospital system's president and chief executive officer, would unveil a plan to bring a medical school to the North Side campus.
However, state Sen. Jay Costa, D-Forest Hills, who received an invitation and has the date marked on his calendar, said he believes Dr. Olivia's announcement will indeed be about launching a medical school.
"I cannot say definitively" what Dr. Olivia will disclose, Mr. Costa said, but "I just know they're making an announcement about the medical school."
The invitation for the event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center tells guests to prepare for "a special celebration and announcement regarding tomorrow's physicians."
