A 10-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday after apparently placing her grandmother's painkilling patches on her body, city police said.

Police were called to the girl's home in the 2000 block of Bracey Drive in East Hills about 10:15 a.m., after the girl's mother discovered her unconscious and not breathing, wearing fentanyl patches. Police said the girl had on two patches that are believed to have belonged to her grandmother, who suffers from cancer.

City homicide detectives are investigating because of the child's condition. It was unclear how the girl was able to retrieve the patches. She was at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC Monday night.

Fentanyl is a powerful narcotic painkiller commonly used to treat cancer pain and can be fatal to children.
