A woman could face child endangerment charges after her 4-year-old son walked away from their home in Crafton Heights Thursday afternoon while she was sleeping and medicated.

A teacher at Schaeffer Elementary School found the boy wandering on Clairhaven Street about 1:15 p.m., wearing soiled pajamas, shoes on the wrong feet and an unzipped coat, police said.

The teacher took the boy to the school, where staff members recognized his name because his siblings once attended there. Officers learned that the boy's address was in the 1400 block of Crafton Boulevard, a few blocks from where he was found.

Police went to the home and spoke with the child's mother, who was at home recuperating from a car accident and was "sleeping due to medication," police said. Police have not released her name.

Her fiance, who realized the child was missing and went searching for him, told officers he saw the boy sleeping just before he left the house about 11:30 a.m. The fiance returned home at 2 p.m. and the boy was gone.

Police think the boy was in the cold for an hour and a half but seemed to be in good condition, as school personnel were caring for him.

Children, Youth and Families was notified, and police said they will consult with the district attorney's office about whether to charge the mother.
